Social canteen services in the Republic of Moldova will be improved with the support of the European Union

Event pictureFive social canteen services in the Republic of Moldova will be granted financial support for a period of almost three years and at least 5300 vulnerable persons will benefit from food distributed through the Food Bank to social canteens.

This support is facilitated by the European Union through the EU-funded project ”Partnerships for inclusive and resilient social canteen services,” co-funded and implemented by P.I. “Keystone Moldova,” P.A. “Concordia.Social Projects” and P.I.S.M. “Diaconia.”

The launch event of the project took place on April 12, 2022 at the Food Bank Headquarters.

The objective of the project is to improve the operation of social canteen services in the Republic of Moldova and to ensure a wider access to the services for people from vulnerable groups.

By promoting social innovation, the project aims to adjust the legal framework legislating the activity of social canteen services and making them more efficient. At the same time, support will be provided for the development of the Food Bank as a mechanism for collecting and distributing food surplus to be redirected to social services.

In order to achieve the project objectives and partnerships, a multisectoral collaboration with the ministries in charge will be established, namely with the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, Ministry of Environment.

Event picture“In this time of crisis marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and the refugees from the war in Ukraine seeking shelter in Moldova, improved social canteen services will have an immediate impact on the quality of life of children from vulnerable families, elderly people and people with disabilities. At the same time, sustainable models of social services will be developed in partnership with local and central public authorities,” said Ludmila Malcoci, I.P. Keystone Moldova.

The project is part of a wider assistance scheme provided by the EU to reduce food insecurity and support vulnerable groups in Moldova. Thus, in 2022, within the program “Supporting together the vulnerable population affected by the energy crisis,” the EU will provide financial assistance to the “Table of Joy” campaign, the largest national social solidarity project, carried out in partnership with the Food Bank. In addition, the activity of the mobile social canteen “Near the fellow men” from Chisinau municipality and the social canteen service from Roșu village, Cahul district managed by P.I.S.M “Diaconia” will be ensured.

Mrs. Magdalena Mueller-Uri, Head of Cooperation of the EU-Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, reiterated the EU’s commitment to support vulnerable groups in the country.

”The European Union is providing continuous support to vulnerable people in the Republic of Moldova in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, energy crisis and food insecurity due to the war in Ukraine. Thanks to the EU funding provided in the framework of this project, five social canteens services will be re-designed with improved infrastructure and logistics, based on innovative models and best practices from the EU Member States. At least 5,300 people will benefit from food products distributed through the Food Bank to social services all over the country,” concluded Mrs. Magdalena Mueller-Uri.

The implementation period of the project “Partnerships for inclusive and resilient social canteen services” is January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2024, the total value being about 1,300.00.00 EUR.
